Improvised duos by Hal Rammel (amplified palettes) and Christopher Burns (electric guitar). Previous recordings by Scrawl have emphasized the electric nature of their instruments — Rammel’s custom-made artist’s palettes rely on contact microphones for sound projection, and Burns’ approach to the guitar emphasizes the amplification of very quiet sounds and gestures. This new album moves from electric to electronic — both musicians play through Burns’ Xenoglossia software, which applies a constantly fluctuating web of transformations to the instrumental performances in real time. Densely layered and rhythmically intense, Containing Only Magnitudes explores color, gesture, and improvised communication beyond instrumental limits.
