Tanngrisnir, the improvising duo of Christopher Burns and Trevor Saint, is dedicated to fusions of composition and improvisation. They develop bespoke software and technology and invent rules, games, and koans, all designed to integrate preconceived intention and spur-of-the-moment decision-making in new and innovative ways. Their approach emphasizes clear musical trajectories, wide-ranging sonic exploration, and furious rhythmic energy.
Upstream weaves together recordings of as-it-happened improvisations with tracks which intensely rework those improvisations in post-production. The album’s improvised performances range from volcanic outpourings to spare and delicate explorations, always emphasizing imaginative use of sound and texture. Meanwhile, the “remix” constructions use custom generative editing software to explore rapidly shifting patterns and gestures, radically transforming the original performances.
